Separate the value categories

- Raw materials, work in process and finished stock
- Outdoor inventory, property in the open and property off premises
- Mobile equipment, customer property and property in transit
Understand valuation
Replacement cost and actual cash value are not interchangeable. Specialized machinery may have installation, freight, foundations, controls and calibration costs beyond the invoice price. Older equipment may be difficult to replace with like kind and quality.
Watch seasonal and market peaks
Inventory values can change with commodity prices, buying cycles and large contracts. Consider reporting forms, peak-season endorsements or higher limits when values fluctuate materially.
Coinsurance and margin clauses
Coinsurance can reduce a covered claim when reported values are too low. Agreed-value, blanket limits and margin clauses can change the calculation but do not eliminate the need for accurate statements of values.
